Classical Spanish Guitar Concert at CCP Little Theater

Instituto Cervantes de Manila, in celebration of the 2011 Philippine International Guitar Festival and Competition, presents a classical guitar concert featuring renowned Spanish guitarist Àlex Garrobé on Thursday, January 27, 7pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Little Theater.



The Catalan soloist, one of the leading musicians in this year’s guitar festival, will feature the finest works in the Spanish repertoire through a selection of compositions by guitarists such as E. Sainz de la Maza, J. Guinjoan, C.Pedrell, F. Moreno Torroba, and J.Turina.

No stranger to classical guitar fans around the world, Garrobé is one of the best known classical guitarists in Spain today. Born into a prominent musical family in Barcelona, Spain, Garrobé graduated with First Class Honors from Alicante Conservatory in 1988. In 1990, he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Scholarship to broaden his studies at the Musikhochschule in Cologne with Hubert Käppel.



Acclaimed by critics and public alike, Garrobé was the winner of the 1988 National Spanish JJMM Competition and the 1989 Infanta Cristina International Guitar Competition being also prize-winner at the Andrés Segovia International Competitions of Almuñecar (1989) and Palma de Mallorca (1987).

He is currently at the peak of a compelling career which includes performances in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and the USA. Among his many collaborations as a soloist with orchestra include the performances at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid and the world premier of the Concert Mare Nostrum of Salvador Brotons performed in the 1999 Lublin Guitar Festival in Poland.

Currently he resides in Barcelona where he teaches at Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya. He is also regularly invited to give master classes in several music institutions and universities: Stockolm, Warsaw, Oslo, Amsterdam, London(Guildhall School), Helsinki(Sibelius Academy ) Peking or Tokyo.

On Thursday, Spanish masterpieces will be brought to life through Garrobé’s passionate guitar performance. Àlex Garrobé in concert is organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila in collaboration with The Guitar Friends, CCP, Spanish Embassy in the Philippines, Spanish Agency International Cooperation for Development (AECID), the Ministry of Culture of Spain, and the New World Hotel.
